2-Bromo-1-(thien-2-yl)propan-1-one is a metabolite of the drug thiabendazole. It is an inhibitor of sphingomyelinase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phospholipids to produce phosphatidic acid and sphingosine. 2-Bromo-1-(thien-2-yl)propan-1-one has been shown to inhibit the biosynthesis of sphingomyelinase in liver microsomes and also inhibits the activity of this enzyme in a pharmacophore model. This compound has been found to have inhibitory potency against sphingomyelinase in plasma samples from patients with cancer and neurological disorders.
