Besilate is an active pharmaceutical ingredient that belongs to the class of antihistamines. It is chemically stable and has a long half-life, which makes it useful for treatment of allergic symptoms. Bepotastine besilate is a prodrug that is metabolized to bepotastine in vivo. The pharmacokinetics of besilate are complex due to its binding with benzalkonium chloride, which may alter its absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. For example, it has been observed that bepotastine besilate was not absorbed after oral administration when administered with food containing high levels of fat or proteins. The drug has shown inhibition against human P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates but not other control substances.
