It belongs to the class of cyclic oxychlorides and has a crystal structure of (C) with two hydrogen bonds. The compound was synthesized from propanoic acid in the presence of triethylamine and sodium hydroxide via an oxychloride intermediate. 6,7-Dihydro-1-methyl-pyrrolo[2,3-C]azepine-4,8(1H,5H)-dione is highly selective for plants over mammals and birds due to its high solubility in water.
