N1-[2-Bromo-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]acetamide (NAPA) is a drug metabolite that is formed by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver. This metabolite has been detected in human plasma, urine and faeces. NAPA has been shown to be a major metabolite of the antidepressant drug nortriptyline. The main route of elimination for NAPA is through conjugation with glucuronic acid. High-performance liquid chromatography can be used for the separation and quantification of metabolites such as NAPA. The use of on-line introduction increases sensitivity and reduces detection time. Chromatographic profiles are often used to distinguish between different compounds with similar properties, such as NAPA and its major metabolites.
