1,2-Dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) is a monolayer lipid that can be used as a drug delivery system. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes and other bacteria, as well as an ability to encapsulate drugs. DPPC can be mixed with trehalose, which is a non-reducing sugar that may protect the lipid from oxidation. The hydrophilic head of DPPC allows it to form a monolayer on the surface of water, while its lipophilic tail anchors it in the membrane of cells. This property makes it possible for DPPC to interact with both drug substances and cells.
