Description:

5-Fluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)-1H-benzimidazole is a compound that has been used in the synthesis of metronidazole. It can be synthesized by reacting pyridine with lead molecules and equimolar amounts of carboxaldehyde and 2,5-difluorobenzene. The filtrate is then purified by recrystallization to yield 5-fluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)-1H-benzimidazole. This compound can also be obtained from the reaction of 1,4-dihydropyridine with hydrogen fluoride. 5FBA has been used in the synthesis of other drugs such as clozapine and fluoxetine.
