Description:

Natamycin is a polyene macrolide antibiotic that inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine moiety in the 23S ribosomal RNA. Natamycin is used as a food preservative and has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, enzyme activities, and epoxidase activity in wild-type strains of Candida albicans. It also binds to calcium pantothenate and reduces its biological properties. The drug can be used for the treatment of various fungal infections, including candidiasis, histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and aspergillosis. Natamycin has been shown to have physiological effects on disease activity in models systems.
