Product Information
- 1-(5-Methoxypyridin-2-yl)-1-ethanone
- 2-Acetyl-5-methoxypyridine
1-(5-Methoxypyridin-2-yl)ethanone is a reactive compound that has been shown to bind to hemoglobin in the red blood cells of sickle cell disease patients. This binding leads to alterations in the shape of the erythrocytes, which causes them to clump together and form clots. The affinity of this compound for hemoglobin is much higher than that of other compounds tested, such as acetaminophen or benzoic acid. 1-(5-Methoxypyridin-2-yl)ethanone has been studied for its use as a long-acting hypoxic agent that may be used in conjunction with oxygen therapy for patients with pathological conditions such as sickle cell disease or pulmonary hypertension. This drug has also been hypothesized to increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in erythrocytes and reduce oxidative stress by inhibiting the production of free radicals.
