1-Methyl-3-phenylurea is an agrochemical that belongs to the group of hydrogen bond forming chemicals. It is used as a herbicide to control weeds and as a fungicide to control fungus on crops. 1-Methyl-3-phenylurea is an acid, which means it can react with water and form hydrogen ions, making it acidic. It has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria such as Escherichia coli K-12. The uptake of 1-methyl-3 phenylurea by bacteria was dependent on the pH of the environment and the presence of aristolochic acid. Additionally, it may have genotoxic potential in coliforms and has carcinogenic potential in rats when given orally at high doses or injected subcutaneously at low doses.
