Phosphinodithioic acid, P,P-diphenyl- is a phosphinic acid. It has been used in biological studies and has shown some activity against tuberculosis. The compound also exhibits a systemic effect in mammals. Taken orally, the compound is hydrolyzed to release p-phenylphosphinic acid (PPPA). PPPA binds to the mammalian enzyme myeloperoxidase and forms a covalent bond with it. This reaction mechanism leads to an accumulation of hydrogen sulfate (H2S) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons that are toxic to the mammalian cell. Hydrochloric acid is required for this reaction because PPPA can not exist in its free form due to its high reactivity with water.
