Phosphonic acid, (2-oxobutyl)-, diethyl ester is a dienone with an optical rotation of +159°. It is an alkylation agent that reacts with nucleophiles to form a phosphonate ester. This compound is also used in the synthesis of chiral β-unsaturated ketones. Phosphonic acid, (2-oxobutyl)-, diethyl ester has been shown to be an effective reactant for the synthesis of phosphonates and pyrrole derivatives.
