Ethyl 6-chloro-6-oxohexanoate is a trichloromethyl compound that is an organic solvent. It is synthesized by the reaction of ethyl chloride and hexanoyl chloride in the presence of carbonates as a catalyst. The reaction yield for this synthesis is about 75%. Ethyl 6-chloro-6-oxohexanoate can be used to produce caproic acid, which can be converted to caprylic acid.
