Ethyl 6-chloro-6-oxohexanoate is a trichloromethyl compound that is an organic solvent. It is synthesized by the reaction of ethyl chloride and hexanoyl chloride in the presence of carbonates as a catalyst. The reaction yield for this synthesis is about 75%. Ethyl 6-chloro-6-oxohexanoate can be used to produce caproic acid, which can be converted to caprylic acid. This product has been shown to have chemical and physical properties that are similar to those of chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as residues and toxicity.
