2-(Methylsulfinyl)phenol (2-MSOP) is a heterocyclic compound that has antiviral activity. It inhibits the DNA polymerase of viruses such as herpes simplex, human cytomegalovirus, and varicella zoster. 2-MSOP is also used to treat psoriasis and other dermatological conditions. The sulfoxide group in this molecule is responsible for its inhibitory effect on the enzyme imidazole derivatives, which are involved in the replication of DNA. This chemical can be synthesized by reacting phenyl groups with sulfoxides or sulfones. 2-MSOP has two optical isomers, one with a carbocycle and the other with a benzene group.
