Phenyltrichlorogermane is a nonpolar solvent that is soluble in water. It has an unusually high viscosity and low solubility, which can be attributed to its hydroxyl group and phenyl groups. Phenyltrichlorogermane has been shown to react with hydrogen chloride gas to form chloride yields. This reaction was first observed in the presence of a catalyst, such as aluminum oxide. The magnetic resonance spectra of phenyltrichlorogermane show a broad signal at 6.2 ppm and two signals at 3.8 and 4.7 ppm, indicating the presence of both chlorine atoms and the solid catalyst.
