2-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-2-oxoacetaldehyde (BOMA) is a synthetic compound that was discovered by the reaction of benzoylhydrazone with an amine. BOMA has been used in a method for the efficient synthesis of 13C-NMR spectra and has been shown to be an immune reactant. The compound is stable as a solid, but undergoes rapid decomposition when heated or dissolved in water. The most common side product from BOMA is 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylacetic acid, which can be easily removed by hydrogenation. This process forms 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionic acid and methyl 4-(benzoyloxy)benzoate. BOMA can also be reduced to its corresponding alcohols, hemimercaptal and hemimercaptal acetate, with sodium borohyd
