Product Information
1,10-Phenanthroline-2-carbonitrile (1,10-phen) is a metal coordination compound. It has been shown to catalyze the hydrolysis of ethylene glycol and 1,4-butanediol to produce water and carbon dioxide. The reaction proceeds through an alkaline hydrolysis mechanism in which the hydroxide ion serves as a nucleophile. 1,10-Phenanthroline-2-carbonitrile has also been found to be a ligand for some transition metals and can coordinate with two metal ions. In addition, it is able to bind to chlorides and act as a nucleophile or Lewis acid catalyst. FTIR spectra have shown that 1,10-phen binds to metal ions such as copper(II), zinc(II), silver(I), lead(II), mercury(II), palladium(II), platinum(II), nickel(II) and gold (III).
