2,4-Dimethylpyridine N-oxide is a perchlorate with chemical properties that are similar to those of the more common perchlorates. It has been shown to be a ligand for lanthanides and act as a catalyst in some reactions. 2,4-Dimethylpyridine N-oxide has been used as an analytical reagent and as a catalyst for organic synthesis. It is insoluble in acetone but soluble in ether, chloroform, benzene and carbon tetrachloride. 2,4-Dimethylpyridine N-oxide can be prepared by oxidation of 2-ethylaniline with sodium hypochlorite in the presence of potassium hydroxide.
