Product Information
3-Methyl-1H-indol-4-ol is a glycol that is used as a reagent in the synthesis of ascorbic acid and sulfate esters. It can be isolated from plants of the genus Cinchona and related genera. 3-Methyl-1H-indol-4-ol can also be synthesized from indole-3-acetic acid by reaction with methyl iodide and acetone. The synthesis of 3MIA starts with the conversion of indole to 1,2,3,5,6 tetrahydroindole by reacting it with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid. This is followed by hydrogenation to give 1,2,3,4 tetrahydroindole. The last step in the synthesis is converting 1,2,3,4 tetrahydroindole to 3MIA with methyl iodide and acetone.
