Product Information
- beta-Butylnaphthalene
2-Butylnaphthalene is a colorless liquid with an odor that has been described as similar to that of naphthalene. It is not known whether 2-butylnaphthalene is a natural product or an artificial substance. This compound has been shown to be more reactive than naphthalene in the hydrogenation reaction. The kinetic data for this reaction suggest that the rate-limiting step is the insertion of hydrogen into the aromatic system. The active site for this reaction may be located on one of the two methyl groups, which are either on adjacent carbons or separated by three carbons. The kinetic data show that 2-butylnaphthalene can undergo both substitution and addition reactions, and it also forms dihydroaromatic compounds with hydrogen.
2-Butylnaphthalene also exhibits selectivities for different aromatic hydrocarbons when reacting with dichloromethane extract: it reacts preferentially with anthracene,
