Description:

3-Benzyl-2,4-pentanedione is a molecule that can be polymerized to form an epoxide. It has been shown to chelate metal ions, such as boron trifluoride etherate, and form fluorescent compounds. 3-Benzyl-2,4-pentanedione can be used to produce polymers with various properties because it can react with carboxylic acids and chlorides. The reaction with boron trifluoride etherate is irreversible and the polymerization process is immobilized by the use of chelate rings. Fluorescence spectrometry has been used to identify the presence of fluorine in 3-benzyl-2,4-pentanedione as well as other molecules that have reacted with it.
