Sodium pivalate is a metabolite of carnitine, which is an amino acid that regulates the production of energy in cells. It has been shown to have pharmacological effects and has been used as an experimental model for infectious diseases. Pivalic acid is also produced by the metabolism of pivalic acid and has been shown to be effective against hepatic steatosis and caproic acid induced by ischemia-reperfusion injury. Sodium pivalate has also been shown to be able to inhibit the growth of bacteria in wastewater treatment plants.
