Methyl geranate is a chemical substance that is used as an analytical method for determining the purity of pharmaceutical preparations. It is used primarily in the determination of erythromycin and ketoconazole in tablets. Methyl geranate reacts with the drug molecule to form an intermediate, which can be detected by gas chromatography. This reaction has been shown to be inhibited by acidic ph, co2 flow, and control agents such as α-pinene. The model system for this analysis uses solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). The chemical structure of methyl geranate is unknown and its reactions are not well understood. Methyl geranate has been shown to inhibit the growth of yeast cells.END>
