(2S)-4-(Acetylamino)-2-aminobutanoic acid (AABA) is a metabolite of arginine. It is produced by the conversion of arginine to ornithine and then to AABA by the enzyme diaminopropionate, which also catalyzes the reverse reaction. AABA has been found in animal tissue and fatty acids, as well as in bacterial isolates from various environments. It has been shown to be an intermediate in the synthesis of volatile fatty acids from amino acids. The technique used for the detection of this compound is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
