Gold oxide is a gold-based nanomaterial that has been shown to have the ability to catalyze the reduction of chloride in acid solutions. Gold oxide can be synthesized by reacting gold with aqueous solution of sodium chlorite, which forms a gold chloride complex. The reaction mechanism is not currently known, but it is believed that oxidation products are formed during the process. The formation of these products is dependent on pH and concentration. It has been speculated that the active natural product may be an oxygen-centered species, based on the nmr spectra and morphology. This material has also been shown to have antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
