Rhenium oxide is an oxide of the metal rhenium. It has transport properties that are similar to those of oxygen and can be used in cell culture experiments. Rhenium oxide has a thermal expansion coefficient that is very close to that of water, making it useful in biological products such as blood substitutes. The compound also has a redox potential that ranges from -0.9 V to +1.2 V, depending on the conditions, which makes it suitable for use in human serum samples and other applications requiring a neutral pH. Rhenium oxide also reacts with fatty acids and light emission is observed when these compounds react with the compound at lower temperatures. In addition, rhenium oxide can be used as a model system for studying reactions involving neutral phs. Laser ablation is also a possible method of preparation for this compound, as well as its derivatives such as rhenium nitride or carbonyl-substituted rhenium oxides.
