Tungsten oxide is a chemical compound with the molecular formula WO3. Tungsten oxide has been used to identify and quantify trace amounts of molybdenum in water samples. It is also used as a catalyst for transfer reactions. This compound is synthesized by heating tungsten metal with oxygen gas at high temperatures and pressures, or by reacting tungsten with phosphotungstic acid. The reaction mechanism of tungsten oxide involves the formation of metal carbonyls, which are thermodynamically unstable and decompose to form particles. These particles then react with O2 and H2O to form WO3. The activation energy for this reaction is 8-9 kcal/mol, which corresponds to an nmr spectrum between 200 and 400 MHz in frequency range.
