Manganese(III)oxide (MnO2) is an important industrial chemical that is used in wastewater treatment. It can be used in a number of ways to remove phosphorus and other contaminants from wastewater. The removal process involves the reaction of MnO2 with water vapor, which produces manganous ions (Mn2+) and hydrogen ions (H+). These ions react with phosphate or other contaminants to form soluble metal phosphates or metal hydroxides, which are then removed from the water by settling or filtration. Manganese(III)oxide has also been shown to have an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy-based redox potential of -0.5 V, making it a good candidate for use as an oxidation catalyst. Manganese(III)oxide is commonly synthesized by reacting manganese oxide with sodium carbonate, however this process does not produce anhydrous sodium; instead it produces sodium carbonate along with the desired product.
