Direct Blue 86 is a dye that belongs to the class of hydroxyl group-containing glycol ethers. It is used in wastewater treatment as an antimicrobial agent. Direct Blue 86 has been shown to be toxic to bacteria, with a median lethal dose (LD50) of 1.5g/kg when administered orally. The toxicity of Direct Blue 86 may be due to its ability to react with fatty acids and form reactive intermediates that can bind covalently to bacterial proteins and cell walls, leading to cell death.
Direct Blue 86 also has detergent properties and can be used in detergent compositions for surface methodology or as a magnesium salt for process optimization.
