Bis(6-methylheptyl) maleate (BMM) is a quaternary ammonium salt used as an anticancer drug. It is structurally related to the natural product maleic acid. BMM has shown cytotoxicity against human leukemia cells, with IC50 values of 0.5 mg/mL or less. This compound also inhibits hepatitis C virus replication and has been shown to be effective against antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. BMM can be prepared by combining potassium dichromate, calcium carbonate, deionized water, and polycarboxylic acid in the correct proportions in a sample preparation vessel. The sealant is then applied to the top of the container, which is then shaken vigorously until all components are mixed together. Bis(6-methylheptyl) maleate can also be synthesized by reacting maleic acid with hexamethylene diamine and benzoyl chloride in a hydroalcoholic solution.
