Description

2-Methylfluorene is an organic compound that is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It is the simplest member of the 2-methyl group of phenanthrene derivatives and consists of a ring with two methyl groups. 2-Methylfluorene has been detected in coal tar and creosote, as well as in some petroleum fractions. This compound has been classified by IARC as an irritant to skin, eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. 2-Methylfluorene has also been shown to be carcinogenic in animals and may be carcinogenic in humans. The cancer risk from occupational exposure to this substance is not clear due to lack of data.
