Ethanol-D6 is a potential biomarker for the detection of metabolic disorders and liver damage. The hydroxyl group in ethanol-D6 reacts with basic proteins, such as albumin, to form a deuterated derivative. This reaction is used for the measurement of the hepatic steatosis and liver cells in vivo. The hydroxyl group also reacts with fatty acid to form a monoclonal antibody. The analytical method of ethanol-D6 can be applied to various types of samples, such as human blood serum and rat liver microsomes. The histological analysis of rat liver microsomes showed that ethanol-D6 can be used to detect histological changes caused by alcohol consumption.
