4-Cyano-2-ethylpyridine is a peroxide with a molecular weight of 114.09 g/mol and a tautomeric form that is postulated to be the biomimetic radical species responsible for initiating the oxidation of ethionamide. The 4-cyano group can donate an electron to the electron acceptor, which causes it to become more positive. This electron donation leads to the formation of an unstable radical intermediate, which decomposes into a reactive oxygen species and stabilizes itself by accepting electrons from other molecules or radicals. 4-Cyano-2-ethylpyridine has been shown to have antimycobacterial activity in vitro and in vivo through inhibition of mycobacterial DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. 4-Cyano-2-ethylpyridine also has some activity against multidrug resistant tuberculosis organisms due to its ability to bind to flavins.
