1-Hydroxy-2-butanone acetate is a nitrogenous organic compound that can be produced from biomass. It has been investigated for its potential use as a precursor to the production of formaldehyde and other chemicals. 1-Hydroxy-2-butanone acetate has been shown to be thermally stable at temperatures up to 300 °C, and it also has an advantage in that it does not release toxic gases such as hydrogen chloride or carbon monoxide when heated. 1-Hydroxy-2-butanone acetate is also used in the production of hemicellulose and cellulose, which are important components of many products including paper, textiles, and adhesives.
