2-Benzylbenzyl alcohol is an aldehyde with a molecular weight of 120.1 g/mol. It is a metastable substance that exists as two isomers at room temperature: the more stable 2,4-isomer and the less stable 2,5-isomer. The kinetic data for this compound are dependent on temperature, as shown by its transition to the 2,5-isomer at higher temperatures. This product can be produced by irradiation of benzaldehyde with ultraviolet light in the presence of oxygen gas. The product yield depends on various parameters, such as wavelength and intensity of irradiation and concentration of oxygen gas. 2-Benzylbenzyl alcohol has been used as a reagent for chemical synthesis in organic chemistry laboratories because it can be oxidized to benzoic acid or reduced to benzaldehyde. It has also been used in microscopy experiments to study five-membered rings because it provides both positive and negative ions with high stability
