Product Information

Name:
N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-N-methylformamide
Synonyms:
  • Formamide, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-methyl-
Description:

N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-N-methylformamide (NEMF) is a plasticizer that is used in polymeric materials to increase the flexibility and toughness. NEMF has been shown to disrupt the bacterial cell membrane by interacting with the lipid bilayer. This interaction leads to a change in the permeability of the cell membrane, which can be observed through microscopy. NEMF also absorbs some of the electron beam, leading to an observable stripper effect. The diffraction patterns obtained from NEMF are consistent with hydrogen bonding interactions between molecules. X-ray crystallography has revealed that NEMF contains two hydroxyl groups and one methyl group. Quantitative analysis has shown that these three functional groups are responsible for its dissolution properties and its ability to affect hydrogen bonding interactions.
