Quinoline 1-oxide is a compound that has been shown to have carcinogenic and mutagenic activity. It has been shown to increase the proliferation rate of sublines in culture, with no detectable cytotoxicity. Quinoline 1-oxide has also been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis in K562 cells through the inhibition of both DNA polymerase and topoisomerase II. The mutagenic effect of this compound may be due to its ability to induce spontaneous mutations. Quinoline 1-oxide is thermally stable and can be reduced by catalytic hydrogenation or cinnoline, which makes it an ideal candidate for use as a fuel additive. This compound has also been shown to be used as a pharmaceutical agent due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
