1-Methyl-2-methylsulphonyl-5-nitroimidazole (NITRO) is a molecule with a nitro group in the alpha position. The redox potentials of this molecule are influential, and it reacts with both aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Nitro has antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as anti-fungal properties. NITRO may be used for skin care products to treat acne or other skin conditions. It can also be used as a diagnostic agent to measure the glucose levels in people with diabetes mellitus type 2.
