L-Cysteine is a chromophore that is reactive with styrene and orientations. It can react with epoxides to form polyepoxides. This compound also reacts with methylnitrosourea to form polypeptides containing methylnitrosourea groups, which are carcinogenic. L-Cysteine is a functional group that has two phenyl groups. It is soluble in water and has a viscometric value of 1.00 at 20 degrees Celsius. It has a dichroism of -0.3 (at 295 nm). L-Cysteine has been shown to increase the viscosity of solutions when mixed with water or other compounds such as glycerol, ethanol, or methanol.
