1-Allyl-4-chlorobenzene is an alkene that can be synthesized by the palladium-catalyzed reaction of 1-chloro-4-ethoxybenzene and allyl bromide. The palladium complexes are prepared by adding Pd(OAc)2 to a solution of ethyl esters, nucleophiles, and diphosphines in EtOH at room temperature. The mechanism for this reaction is thought to involve the addition of a nucleophile (in this case, allyl bromide) to the electron deficient alkenes. This process is known as electrophilic addition. The product can be optimized by using additives such as acidic or basic conditions, or by using chiral catalysts such as titanium tetrachloride or zinc chloride.
