2,2'-Bipyridine-4-carboxylic acid is a cyclic peptide that was designed to have technetium as its radioisotope. This labelling allows for the introduction of the molecule into tumour cells and imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) or single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).
The ligand is bifunctional and has bidentate binding capabilities. The ligand can be used in molecular imaging techniques to produce high contrast images of tumours. 2,2'-Bipyridine-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to bind to the receptor sites on cell surfaces and will not interfere with any other receptors on the cell surface. This compound also has intramolecular hydrogen bonds that help it bind more tightly to the cell surfaces.
