Diethyl [2,2'-bipyridine]-5,5'-dicarboxylate is an inhibitor of the enzyme aldehyde oxidase. It binds to the active site of aldehyde oxidase and blocks its activity. It is used in the synthesis of collagen and other connective tissue proteins. The compound has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin and streptomycin. This compound binds to bacterial DNA by competitive inhibition.
