4,4'-Dimethyl diphenyl sulfoxide (4,4'-DMDS) is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that is used as an experimental drug for the treatment of bacterial infections. It has been shown to be effective against a variety of bacteria by inhibiting the enzyme enoyl reductase in the bacterial cell membrane. 4,4'-DMDS binds to the sulfhydryl group of this enzyme and prevents it from catalyzing reactions that are vital for the synthesis of fatty acids. This drug also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to water molecules on the surface of cells. 4,4'-DMDS has been synthesized using an asymmetric synthesis with ethyl diazoacetate as a chiral auxiliary. The mechanism of this reaction is thought to involve formation of a sulfoxide intermediate that reacts with another molecule of ethyl diazoacetate to generate two products: one enantiopure and one racemic mixture.
