Benzenemethanol, ±-(2-phenylethynyl)- (BEME) is a reactive terminal alkene that can be used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated ketones. BEME reacts with a propargyl halide to form an activated intermediate, which undergoes nucleophilic addition and subsequent elimination reactions to produce the desired product. The use of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as the activating agent allows for the reaction to be carried out at room temperature. This method has been shown to be effective in synthesizing β-unsaturated ketones from human liver, human lung, and other cancer cells.
