Product Information
- 2-Butenoic acid, 2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-, ethyl ester, (2Z)-
- Ethyl (2Z)-2-acetyl-3-hydroxybut-2-enoate
Ethyl 2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-2-butenoate is a pyrazole compound. It is a crystalline solid that can be obtained by refluxing malonates and ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of an acid. The yield of this reaction is about 50%. Ethyl 2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-2-butenoate has been used as a starting material for the synthesis of other compounds, such as cyclopentadienyl complexes. This substance forms coordination compounds with metal ions, which contain two to four different moieties (e.g., toluene). Ethyl 2-acetyl-3-hydroxy-2-butenoate also forms adducts with other organic molecules that have electron withdrawing groups (e.g., cyclopentadienyl). These interactions have been shown to have an effect on the analytical methods used to determine its purity.
