Benzyltriethylammonium hydroxide is a reactive compound that reacts with the hydroxyl ions in water to produce hydrogen gas and benzyltriethylammonium hydroxide anions. It is used as a disinfectant for water and wastewater treatment. When dissolved in water, it releases chlorine atoms that react with organic matter to form chlorinated hydrocarbons. The pyrrole system also reacts with the benzyltriethylammonium hydroxide anion to form quinoline derivatives, which are reaction products of benzyltriethylammonium hydroxide. This product has high solubility in both water and organic solvents and can be used as a solvent for aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. Benzyltriethylammonium hydroxide is not soluble in oil or fats but is soluble in most other organic solvents.
