Echinulin is a natural compound that has been isolated from the marine sponge Echinodictyon californicum. The chemical structure of echinulin includes amines and acetate extract, which have been shown to have potential as drug targets. The acetate extract has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of HL-60 cells, which may be due to receptor activity. Echinulin also has anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, which may be related to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokine IL-1β. In addition, echinulin inhibits cell factor, which is a key protein in the early stages of cancer development. Chemical biology studies on echinulin are ongoing and it is hoped that this will lead to an understanding of how this agent works at the molecular level and may lead to new therapeutic uses for this natural compound.
