Description

3-(Benzyloxy)-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be a potential anticancer agent. It is metabolized in the liver via biotransformations involving dihydroisoquinolines and sulfamate. 3-(Benzyloxy)-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol can be synthesised by reacting diphenyl ether with quinoline derivative in presence of acid catalyst, followed by nucleophilic substitution with methanesulfonyl chloride. This synthesis may also be performed in presence of carbamic acid as an acid catalyst. Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging technique has been used to demonstrate the distribution of 3-(Benzyloxy)-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol after administration of the drug in mice and rats. The PET images showed accumulation of 3-(Benzyloxy)-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol in tumours and high uptake was observed in lung cancer cells
