Deschloroclozapine is a potent irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Deschloroclozapine reversibly binds to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, inhibiting the breakdown of acetylcholine. This causes an increase in concentration of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, which stimulates postsynaptic receptors and leads to increased activation of cholinergic neurons. The drug also inhibits cellular glutathione reductase and has been shown to be insensitive to acetylcholine receptor.
