2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)acetamide is a chlorine compound that has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria. This antibiotic binds to the ribosomal protein L7, inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal RNA. It is also able to bind to DNA in an acidic environment and can be used as a disinfectant. 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)acetamide has also been shown to have microbicidal effects on epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it may involve binding of the drug to proteins in the cell membrane or inhibition of histone synthesis. 2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)acetamide has been shown to be radioprotective when used in conjunction with radiation therapy for cancer patients with solid tumors. It may work by preventing DNA damage caused by radiotherapy.
