4,7-Dihydroxycoumarin is a potent cytotoxic agent that is active against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and cancer cells. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV-1 in human liver cells. 4,7-Dihydroxycoumarin also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that are involved in these processes. The hydroxyl group on this molecule can form hydrogen bonding interactions with functional groups on other molecules, which may contribute to its cytotoxicity. 4,7-Dihydroxycoumarin is produced by the oxidation of 4-hydroxycoumarin and it has been shown to have tautomeric properties.
